Kanetsugu Naoe (Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls)

Series Overview

Hyakka Ryōran: Samurai Girls is a twelve episode anime released in 2010, based on (but not directly adapting) a series of Japanese light novels of the same name. The series is a fantasy/alternate history, focusing on a man named Muneakira Yagyu and his team of descendants of famous samurai from Japan's history.

Biological Unit

In the series' sixth episode (Osoi Kuru, Umi no Kaibutsu/"The Sea Monster Attacks"), Kanetsugu Naoe has been sent to assassinate Muneakira while him and his team are visiting a beach resort. Kanetsugu's attempt fails, and she is chased outside of the resort grounds by Muneakira and his cohorts. Prior to her failed attack, Kanetsugu had been given a small capsule by her masters containing a shikigami that could help her in such a situation. Cornered by Muneakira and the Samurai Girls, Kanetsugu activates the capsule and unleashes a bulbous octopus-like sea creature. The sea creature "eats" Kanetsugu and absorbs her into it's body, using her to double it's powers and abilities.

Muneakira and the Samurai Girls realize that if a small "eye" located on the fleshy tether connecting Kanetsugu and the shikigami is destroyed, then she can be rescued without dying. They summon Jubei Yagyu, a skilled samurai, to make the precise shot needed to destroy the red core. She succeeds, and Kanetsugu is released.
