Lucille Liliant (After War Gundam X)

After War Gundam X (AKA New Mobile Century Gundam X, or simply Gundam X) is the seventh installment of Sunrise's long-running Gundam series, which aired a total of 49 episodes from April 5, 1996 to December 28, 1996.

Biological Unit

In the series' 18th episode (The Sea of Lorelei), a underwater scavenging crew hired by antagonist Olba Frost discovers a grey container located at the bottom of the Sea of Lorelei, which is said to be haunted by a "singing ghost" by some accounts. The container is recovered and brought aboard their vessel, where it is finally unsealed. To the shock of Olba and the crew, inside is the crate is a woman trapped within a honey-colored glass coffin hooked up to a small machine.

The series protagonist team (including Gundam pilot Garrod Ran, the young telepath Tiffa Adill, and former military pilot Jamil Neate) arrive in the sea and find Olba's ship, though Olba has already climbed into his own Gundam for an attack. As the two teams fight, Tiffa becomes possessed by a mysterious spirit, one which seems familiar with Jamil. The sleeping woman and her electric coffin begin to glow, and release a strong burst of energy that disrupts the electronic equipment of both teams.

The spirit then reveals herself to be Lucille Liliant, Jamil's former superior when he served in the United Nations Earth army. Lucille explains that she was a Newtype, a person who had evolved and developed powers beyond that of a normal human. Lucille had been recruited to serve as the living power source of a top secret weapon called the L-System, which would harness her Newtype powers to generate strong electromagnetic pulses on command. After Lucille had been "installed" into the L-System, the ship carrying her was caught in a storm and sank to the bottom of the sea, where she remained for many years until Olba's crew found her.

In the following episode (It's As If I'm Dreaming), the protagonist team lead an attack on Olba's ship to recuse Lucille, which is successful. When the battle is over, the crew board Olba's ship and find Lucille, in the coffin, her spirit (still in Tiffa's body) telling them she has exhausted the last of her strength to aid them in the battle to free her. She releases Tiffa of her possession and passes away, and her body is removed from the L-System and given a burial at sea.

Manga

Lucille and the L-System appeared in the serialized After War Gundam X manga released in Comic BomBom magazine in 1996. Unlike the anime, Lucille and the L-System are destroyed during the attack on Olba's ship, and her coffin sinks back to the bottom of the ocean.

Video Games
