Series Overview
Excalibur is a comic book by Marvel Comics which first started publication in 1988. A spin-off of the X-Men and Captain Britain series, the book as been "relaunched" as new volumes three times in the years following, with it's most recent (Volume 4) beginning in 2019.
Biological Unit
In the first storyline of Volume 4 (Issues #1-5), X-Men member Rouge (Anna-Marie) is recruited by the Mutant known as Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur to use her power-absorption abilities to help weaken one of the organically grown plant-like teleportation gates of the island of Krakoa in order to connect to the Otherworld and rescue the trapped Betsy Braddock. Betsy severs the connection of the portal while Rouge is connected to it, which in turn weakens Rouge. The tired Rouge tries to draw power from some of the flowers of Krakoa, but is suddenly placed in a magic coma, lying naked on a bed of blue flowers as her body glows purple from the raw magical energy now stored within her.
The members of Excalibur then travel to England with the comatose Rouge, where her power is used to create a plant-based lighthouse (where she served as the beacon). She is eventually roused from her sleep thanks to the Mutant telepath Prestige (Rachael Summers). It is later revealed that Apocalypse intended to use Rouge as part of a magic ritual centuries in the making, planning to open a permanent organic gateway between Earth and Otherworld and use her as a living energy conduit.
