Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (also known as Gamera 3: The Awakening of Iris or Gamera: Incomplete Struggle) is a 1999 kaiju film released theatrically in Japan, and is the eleventh film in the Gamera series overall (though it is the third installment of the rebooted series during the franchise's Heisei era).
Biological Unit
The film's plot focuses on a girl named Ayana Hirasaka (portrayed by Ai Maeda), who was orphaned after a battle between the giant monsters Gamera and Gyaos nearly destroyed her home city in the previous film. While many view Gamera as Japan's protector, Ayana has grown to resent and despise Gamera in the last four years for causing the death of her parents.
In the South Asuka Village, Ayana discovers a strange "rock" hidden away in an underground temple. To her surprise, the rock is actually an egg containing a small lizard-like creature, which she names Iris (after her pet cat) upon it's hatching. Ayana sees this as her opportunity to take her revenge on Gamera, and decides to raise Iris to hopefully one day destroy the monster "protector". Near Iris's egg, she discovers a necklace made of the legendary element Orichalcum, which creates a psychic-bond between the two of them.
Going to the underground temple to check on the young creature several days later, Ayana is horrified to discover that Iris isn't there, and begins to run through the forest looking for him. She finds that her pet monster has nearly doubled in size (as it had tried to sneak off to feed on the wildlife of the forest), and now possesses the ability to fly. It is then that Ayana surrenders herself to the creature (or is perhaps psychically influenced by Iris), and is taken back to the temple.
Hours later, Ayana's friend Tatsunari Moribe (one of the few who knew about the temple and the egg) arrived at the underground shrine to look for her after she had not returned for dinner. He was horrified to discover that Ayana was unconscious within a newly formed cocoon. The growing Iris was attempting to physically bond with it's caretaker. Tatsunari freed Ayana just as the assimilation was almost near completion, as several large veins connecting her to the monster had embedded themselves into her neck and spine.
While this initial attempt at using Ayana as it's core was unsuccessful, Iris later succeeded during it's rampage in a city. Unlike the previous encounter, Ayana did not surrender to Iris, but was rather pulled in by force. With her now bonded to him, a reinvigorated Iris continued to fight Gamera until his opponent punched directly into his ribs and rescued Ayana, killing the malevolent monster for good.
