Doctor Who is a long-running British science-fiction television series which began in 1963. The original run of the show ended in 1989, but the series was later revived in 2005.

In the twelfth episode of the first season of the revived series (Bad Wolf), The Doctor and his companions discover they have been brought aboard a space station-turned-television studio just outside of Earth's atmosphere called The Game Station (formerly known as Satellite 5, a location previously visited 100 years prior to these events in the episode The Long Game).

During the course of the episode, it is explained that the satellite's transmissions are linked to the brain of The Controller (portrayed by Martha Cope), a blind human female whose mind and body are linked to the computers which operate everything within the station itself. Though it is unknown how long this woman has served as "The Controller" (or if there were any previous Controllers), it is mentioned that she has been in this role since the age of five.

Later in the episode, The Controller speaks directly to The Doctor to warn him of her "masters", the ones who have been manipulating the operations of Satellite 5/The Game Station for centuries. After doing so, she is teleported to the ship of her masters, which reveal themselves to be The Daleks, a long-time enemy of The Doctor. Her moment of freedom from the computer is short-lived, as she is almost immediately killed after her teleportation.

The Controller shuts down all broadcast signals during a solar flair, a time which she uses to talk to The Doctor without her "masters" listing.

Teleported into the Dalek ship, the change in lighting reveals round lacerations in her skin from where the cables ran directly into her body.
